Family Ties and Child Removal in America; Plus, Resistance in Residence Artist Sarah Crowell

On March 26, 2018, rescue workers discovered a crumpled SUV and the bodies of two women and multiple children at the bottom of a cliff along the California coastline. The crash was a murder-suicide: a white lesbian couple had adopted six Black children, with a paper-trail of child abuse and neglect that had been ignored by the child welfare system. We’re in conversation with Roxana Asgarian, a journalist whose focus on the story developed into an incredible book – a deeply reported indictment of a system that continues to fail America’s most vulnerable children, while upending the lives of their families. The book is called We Were Once a Family: A Story of Love, Death, and Child Removal in America.

This week’s Resistance in Residence Artist is dancer, artist, choreographer, consultant and founder of Destiny Arts Center, Sarah Crowell.
