KPFA turned 74 years old this weekend, and we are celebrating KPFA’s history of covering the people’s voices and protest by listening back to some of our archival tape. We listen to an excerpt from this station, covering the San Francisco rebellions that later became known as the White Night Riots, after a jury announced a verdict that Dan White, the homophobic terrorist who assassinated Harvey Milk and George Moscone, was not guilty of murder, rather, guilty of just 2 counts of voluntary manslaughter. The White Night Riots took place on the day of the verdict, May 21st, 1979, and this coverage was aired just two days later on May 23rd – produced by a collective of gay men who called themselves the KPFA Fruit Punch Collective.
