On this episode of It’s Going Down, we speak with a prisoner at Santa Rita jail in Dublin, California, about how a multi-racial group of prisoners has launched a hunger strike in protest of continued price gouging. We discuss the poor quality of the food at the facility, which forcibly pushes many inmates to spend money for food and other basic items at the commissary. In late December of 2021, the commissary prices were raised yet again, the second time since the pandemic started.
We also speak to an organizer with Oakland Abolition and Solidarity, about hunger-strikes on the inside, and how the prison system tries to suppress them.
The group has also called for a phone-in campaign in support of the hunger strike.
