Last week I had a lovely show planned for New Year’s Day but when I started to head out to KPFA, the elevator in my building was not operational. So this week’s episode is all about what’s left of that New Year’s spirit? Have we already broken a new year’s resolution or two? I know I have.
So what’s the best attitude to have as we contemplate this new year? Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year.” The Dalai Lama argues for optimism: “Choose to be optimistic; it feels better.”

Thomas Hardy makes the case for pessimism: “Pessimism is playing the sure game. You cannot lose at it; you may gain. It is the only view of life in which you can never be disappointed. Having reckoned what to do in the worst possible circumstances, when better arise, as they may, life becomes child’s play.”
