In this special broadcast, we present audio from this year’s Indigenous People’s Sunrise Gathering, a public event held annually on Alcatraz Island on Thanksgiving Day.
The event seeks to honor the traditions of the indigenous peoples on a day normally devoted to giving thanks for the survival of early Jamestown’s white settler community.
This day is also sometimes referred to as Unthanksgiving Day (or Un-Thanksgiving Day). For some Native Americans it has further significance as a celebration of their personal relationship with nature.
