With all the unrest which plagues us locally, nationally and worldwide, we are truly in need of more love. The late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr promoted—and lived—a life of love. Accordingly, this Sunday the Radio Chronilces presents an half hour tribute to the man known throughout the world as the King of Love. The show includes Doreen Rappaport’s Martins’s Words: The Life of Martin Luther King, Jr., narrated by Michael Clarke Duncan. Martin’s Big Words summarises the life work of Dr. King. The show continues with excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches, as well as reflections from former sanitation workers who were on strike in Memphis, TN, back in 1968, where Dr. King gave his last speech the day prior to being assassinated: April 1968. The Radio Chronicles concludes with comments from Melanie DeMore, longtime Bay Area activist, artist, musician, singer, songwriter and educator. Melanie will conduct the Oakland Children’s Community Choir this Sunday at the 9th annual In the Name of Love: A Musical Tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at the Scottish Rites Centre, 1547 Lakeside Drive in Oakland at 7pm. The musical tribute, emceed by Bay Area radio personality Leslie Stovall, also features the phenomenal talent of the Oaktown Jazz Workshop with Khalil Shaheed, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir (under the direction of Terrence Kelly), Linda Tillery and Terrence Kelly, as well as Goapele. Stacey Hoffman, director of Rhythmic Concepts, Inc. (a Bay Area nonprofit which produces the annual musical tribute to Dr. King in Oakland), also shares her story on the meaningfulness of the King of Love.
This week’s Radio Chronicles is hosted and produced by Safi wa Nairobi.
