Radio Chronicles – Juneteenth

Juneteenth, the oldest African American holiday on the calendar, came into fruition when, on 19 June 1865, roughly two years after the abolishon of slavery, slaves in Texas were finally notified of their emancipation. So today's stories and personal accounts include a segment from Ernesto Aguilar and the Radio Youth Programme at KPFT in Houston, featuring the voices of Justin Drew, Chris Gardner, Tony McCasker, Mustafase Medin and Shelly Krafka. You will also hear a documentary by Askia Muhammad produced for Pacifica Radio's WPFW in Washington, D. C. The documentary, Is Juneteenth Revolutionary?, includes work rrom Louis Jordan, Louis X, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Oscar Brown, Jr, Abbey Lincoln, and insight from the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as former Ohio Congress member Tony Hall.
