Joe serves on a mental hospital ship that declares itself an independent nation and declares war on New Zealand. He attends a scientific conference on aphrodisiacs which have the side effect of enhancing memory. Then he goes on an archeological dig in Peru with a beautiful woman, stirring his desire and leading to a painful recollection. These comic stories are juxtaposed against a true account of the longing and loneliness of a woman growing up and finding an impossibly painful love.
