Stephen Kent visits the Hear & Now,
KPFA’s own Stephen Kent, host of Music of the World on Thursday mornings, joins Derk Richardson to update the Hear & Now listeners on his latest musical activities.
First, there’s the return of Australian Bebop Ragas, a remarkable trio with Chapman Stick wizard Teed Rockwell, tabla player/drummer Sameer Gupta, and Kent, of course, on didjeridu and percussion; ABR performs at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley on Sunday, Aug. 10.
Then there’s the unexpected reunion of the original lineup of Trance Mission, the pioneering world fusion ensemble that features Kent, Beth Custer (clarinets, trumpet), Kenneth Newby (sulings, winds, percussion, digital atmospheres) and John Loose (drums, percussion, electronics). Trance Mission plays Yoshi’s in San Francisco on Tuesday, Aug. 12. In addition to recorded music, new and old, Stephen will likely play some live didjeridu in the studio.
