The Music of the ICP Orchestra

In addition to the usual mix of folk-rock, psychedelia and jazz, we’ll sample the music of the ICP Orchestra, currently on its 40th anniversary tour and coming to Yoshi’s in Oakland for one night, Monday, April 9.

Founded in Holland in 1967 by pianist Misha Mengelberg, drummer Han Bennink and saxophonist Willem Breuker (who broke off in the 1970s), the Instant Composers Pool (ICP) Orchestra improvises on original Mengelberg compositions, as well as pieces by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Nichols and Charles Ives, and features top Dutch, European and expatriate American musicians (including violinist Mary Oliver and woodwind virtuoso Michael Moore).
