Mushroom, the Bay Area’s premier "psychedelic kraut-rock, indie-jazz experimental band" performs live, with veteran free-jazz trumpeter Eddie Gale at the fore.

Since sprouting from the Bay Area’s loamy cultural soil 10 years ago, from diverse musical spores that progressive jazz, folk, and rock (electric Miles Davis, Pentangle, Traffic, Soft Machine, Can, King Crimson), Mushroom, anchored by drummer Pat Thomas, has more or less coalesced into the best psychedelic fusion outfit of its kind. As they are on their latest CD, "Joint Happening" (Hyena Records), they are joined in the KPFA studio by visionary trumpeter Eddie Gale, whose playing links the avant-garde jazz of Cecil Taylor and Sun Ra to soul-jazz and funk. Tonight, the eight-piece band also includes Erik Pearson (flute, electric guitar), Josh Pollock and Tim Plowman (electric guitars), Ned Doherty (bass), Matt Cunitz (keyboards), and Dave Mihaly (vibes and percussion).
