this episode is no longer available

Cartola (Oct. 11, 1908-Nov. 30, 1980), one of the founders of the Escola de Samba "Mangueira" is considered one of the greatest samba composers of his generation. His career as a musician and composer fell by the wayside until 1956 when a journalist recognized him working as a car wash in Ipanema. This morning’s show will feature his last recorded live performance in 1978 along with interpretations of the same songs by other musicians.
