APEX Express – September 16, 2004

Hawaiian hula master and chanter Mark Ho‘omalu’s intense style and rhythm played on the gourd drum make him unique. Described as “inventive” by some and “unrestrained” by others" Ho‘omalu crosses between traditional and contemporary music. We’ll learn about this as well as about A New Beginning, a major performance by Mark Ho’omalu’s Academy of Hawaiian Arts happening on Sept. 25th. And, what’s the basis of a lot of electronic Asian Massive music? Apex talks with dance teacher Viki Virk about bhangra, the dhol drums of the Punjab and some background about a South Asian folk beat that’s behind alot of hip-hop sounds and new dance moves. Plus music, calendar and more.
