On today’s show, we examine the upsurge in violence against the transgender community. Insider spent 18 months investigating the murders of 175 transgender people over the span of five years, resulting in a published series called “Deaths in the Family.” They found that that murders of trans people have doubled over the last three years, that only three of the murders they investigated were charged as hate crimes, and that only 28 cases resulted in murder convictions. Matt Drange joins us to discuss his contribution to the series, which is focused on killings of trans people by police officers. Matt Drange is a senior correspondent based out of Insider‘s San Francisco bureau. His work has been published by ProPublica, The Guardian, Salon.com, the San Francisco Chronicle, Pacific Standard and elsewhere.
