Coral reefs around the world are impacted by global threats, like climate change, and local threats, including development on coastlines, fishing, coral harvesting, water quality, garbage, and physical contact with people and ships. Today, on Terra Verde, we’ll look at a few of these threats and what listeners can do to help protect reefs. Guests: Michael Webster, Executive Director of the Coral Reef Alliance, based in San Francisco; Jennifer Smith, Assistant Professor at the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, California; and Bernhard Riegl, Professor and Associate Director of the National Coral Reef Institute at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
