‘Hot House Earth’ could be ‘Stabilized Earth’ study, says author; Plus: What to do about fake news and conspiracies with Slate’s lead tech reporter

0:08 – Today, a jury in Alexandria, VA will hear closing arguments in the trial of Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, in the first trial stemming from Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the Presidential campaign and election. Manafort faces 18 counts of tax and bank fraud stemming from money he earned while working for the pro-Russian political party in the Ukraine and from Russian oligarchs.  If convicted, he could go to prison for the rest of his life.

1:08 – You’ve likely seen the news coverage on a newly released climate change study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science Journal , dubbed “Hot House Earth,” with headlines breathlessly declaring, “Hell on Earth?” “Paradise Lost” and worse. But the study could just as easily have been dubbed using the OTHER term discussed in it by its authors, “Stabilized Earth,” but only if we heed their warnings and take actions outlined in the study. We’re joined by one of the report’s authors. Professor Diana Liverman (@DianaLivteaches in the School of Geography and Development at the University of Arizona, Tucson. She’s co-author of a new paper published by the National Academy of Sciences titled “Trajectories of the Earth System in the Anthropocene.”
