SCOTUS Appears Poised To Gut the Voting Rights Act Again to Give Republicans 10 to 12 New House Seats at the Expense of Black Voters Before Votes Are Cast in the Midterms
We begin with the Supreme Court hearing today on the Louisiana gerrymander to remove black majority districts in which the court’s right wing majority appears poised to eviscerate Section Two of the Voting Rights Act and give the Republicans 10 to 12 additional House seats in the upcoming midterms before any votes are cast, at the expense of representation for black voters in the South. Joining us is David Daley, the author of Antidemocratic: Inside the right’s 50-year plot to control American elections, as well as the national best-seller Ratf**ked: Why Your Vote Doesn’t Count, which has been credited for kickstarting the national movement to reform redistricting. He is the former Editor-in-Chief of Salon, and we discuss his latest article at Salon, “John Roberts is slowly dismantling America.”
Younger Candidates Challenging the Gerontocracy Ruling Our Politics
Then with the oysterman challenging Janet Mills in Maine for the U.S. Senate and the younger Seth Moulton challenging the 80 year old Senator Ed Markey in Massachusetts, we examine the issue of gerontocracy in our politics and speak with Dustin Wahl, the executive director of Fix Our House, where he advocates for multi-member districts and proportional representation on Capitol Hill. In 2024, he was communications director for Dan Osborn’s Independent campaign for the U.S. Senate in Nebraska, and he has a report at The New America Foundation and Protect Democracy, “The Age Divide: How America’s electoral system reinforces the gerontocracy and inhibits young people’s full participation in democracy.”
The Weak and Vindictive Case Trump Has Ginned Up Against Leticia James
Then finally we assess the weak and vindictive case Trump has ginned up against the Attorney General of New York Leticia James and speak with Richard Swanson, the president of the New York County Lawyer’s Association. He was previously a partner at Arnold & Porter, which is one of the few AmLaw 100 firms publicly opposing the Trump Administration. He also served as the chief legal officer of York Capital Management and was the Chair of the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Federal Legislation.
