***This segment is part of a special this week on the crisis of missing and murdered Black women and girls***
Legislation is moving through the California legislature to create an “Ebony Alert”. With a similar concept to the Amber Alert, an Ebony Alert gives particular emergency focus to the disproportionate disappearances of Black women and girls in the state. We’re joined by Aisha Wahab, the California state senator representing the 10th District, which runs from Hayward and Union City south to Sunnyvale and Santa Clara. She is one of the three State Senators who has sponsored Senate Bill 673 to create an emergency alert system – referred to as an “Ebony Alert,” with respect to Black youth, including young women and girls, who are reported missing under unexplained or suspicious circumstances.
