On today’s show we follow up on a story we covered when it first broke: the state of Louisiana is sending children to Angola prison – one of the most notoriously violent prisons in the country – where the children prisoners are being tortured. We speak with Elizabeth Weill-Greenberg, Senior Reporter for The Appeal, a worker-led nonprofit news organization. She writes on prison and jail conditions, and wrongful convictions, and her latest article in the Appeal is called Louisiana Imprisons Children in a Former Death Row Unit: The Kids Say it Haunts Them.

Then, in the first 10 days of 2023, three people have been killed at the hands of the Los Angeles Police Department. The LA chapter of Black Lives Matter Grassroots is organizing in solidarity with the families directly impacted. We speak to Baba Greg Akili, who is a core team member of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, and the Director of the Fannie Lou Hamer Institute. He is also an Instructor at the UCLA Labor Studies Department.
