Fund drive special: Illustrated Black History by George McCalman

George McCalman is an artist and creative director based in San Francisco, who recently published The Illustrated Black History: Honoring the Iconic and the Unseen. He joins us today to discuss the process he went through to narrow his list of historical figures from 500 to 145, his artistic process, and what it meant for him to orient himself around Black history in the US as a young Grenadian immigrant.

Among the figures featured in the book are James Baldwin, Madeline Anderson, Colin Kaepernick, and the first Black person to travel into space, Guion S. Bluford.

FUND DRIVE SPECIAL – Pledge $200 and receive George McCalman’s Illustrated Black History: Honoring the Iconic and the Unseen. It is a gorgeous collection of 145 original portraits that celebrates Black pioneers — famous and less known — in politics, science, literature, music, and more—with biographical reflections.
