0:08 – The Trump Administration bars Hurricane Dorian refugees from the Bahamas in an unprecedented move. Many Afro-Caribbean and African immigrants and asylum seekers are overlooked by the media. To discuss, we’re joined by Nana Gyamfi, a human rights and criminal defense attorney, a professor in the Pan African Studies Department at the California State University Los Angeles, and the Executive Director of Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI).
0:34 – Isabel Bueso, 24, is fighting deportation, and for her life. She was invited to the US from Guatemala when she was four years old, to be a part of an experimental drug therapy treatment, which was ultimately successful. Now, she’s living and working in Oakland, receiving the life-saving transfusion weekly. But the Trump Administration has served her a deportation notice, which is essentially a death sentence, as there is no treatment in Guatemala. Family and community are rallying to stop it. She testified before Congress on Wednesday.
We speak with Martha Kuhl, a registered nurse. She worked at Children’s Hospital Oakland for over 37 years. She is on the California Nursing Association (CNA) Board of Directors.
0:45 – Assemblymember Rob Bonta is the state representative for District 9 encompassing Oakland, Alameda and San Jose. Bueso served as an intern in his office.
