1:08 – The CROWN Act (SB-188) was introduced in the CA legislature this year, and it would ban discrimination based on hair in workplaces and schools. We spend the hour on anti-black racism and discrimination based on hair, coping strategies, hair and identity, and we take listener calls with stories and comments.
First, we’re joined by Senator Holly J Mitchell (@HollyJMitchell) represents Senate District 30 in Los Angeles. She introduced SB 188, or the Crown Act – to ban discrimination based on hair – which unanimously passed 37-0 last week and is now on its way to the State Assembly.
We’re also joined by Lyvonne Proverbs (@lyvonnep) a body and sex positive pastor, transformational speaker, poet, and educator. She is also the founder of Beautiful Scars, based in Oakland, an online storytelling agency focused on trauma, healing and resiliency for black women survivors of childhood sexual abuse and/or male violence.
