We speak with Nicole Klaymoon and Amikaeyla Gaston about the new play Music of the Actualized Child, interweaves street dance, documentary theater, live song, and video art to engage a critical conversation around the school-to-prison pipeline, childhood trauma, race, and healing. Shakti Butler’s new film, Healing Justice, serves as a springboard for visceral movement and musical invention, catalyzing an original work of documentary hip hop theater.

Nicole Klaymoon is Founder and Artistic Director of the Embodiment Project, Dance magazine contributing editor Rita Felciano called Embodiment Project one of the Bay Area’s, “ten companies and artists who challenged expectations and unveiled surprises…in 2012.” SF Chronicle said Klaymoon’s work is “a bit like taking a defibrillator jolt to the soul”. Her new work Ancient Children, sponsored by MAP Fund, explores the ways restorative justice can interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline and will premier at the ODC Theater in June 2018.
Amikaeyla Gaston is a force for change. She’s a Trainer / Facilitator with World Trust. She creates environments that support people in exploring themselves and uses creativity and strategic questioning to support people in addressing their fears, developing a place where everyone has an equal voice. She has led corporations, universities, government and nonprofit organizations through cultural competency & racial equity training. She has done expansive work in the health arena for over the past 20 years and travels the world extensively as a cultural arts ambassador for the state department bringing together artists and healers of all forms and from all specialties to promote healing and wellness through the arts & activism.
