Station Identification, aka Station ID or Legal ID, is scheduled in automation to play at the top of every hour between programs.  Recorded programs do not need to include a Legal ID because it is already scheduled to air through automation.

For Live shows, a Legal ID needs to air at the top of each hour within a 10 minute window before and after the top of the hour.  For example, at 12pm, you could say the Legal ID between 11:50 am up to 12:10 pm.  All Live Music Programs and Live Special Broadcasts that are longer than 1 hour must do a Legal ID at the top of each hour within their show.

What is the Legal ID?

It depends upon the time of day.  Below are the Legal IDs with instructions on when to say them.

Between 7 am and 9 am, between 12:55 pm and 1:05 pm, and between 4 pm and 6 pm, the Legal ID must be the following:

  • You’re listening to 94.1 KPFA Berkeley, 89.3 KPFB Berkeley, 88.1 KFCF Fresno, 97.5 K248BR Santa Cruz, 94.3 K232FZ Monterey, and online at KPFA.ORG

For any other time of day, the short Legal ID can be said:

  • You’re listening to 94.1 KPFA Berkeley, 89.3 KPFB Berkeley, 88.1 KFCF Fresno, and online at KPFA.ORG

NOTE: For the order of IDs the strict rule is that the ID must include the call letters said individually followed by the city. You MAY (but are not required to) insert the frequency between the call letters and city instead of doing them before, so the above can be read as written below OR as ” KPFA 94.1 Berkeley, KPFB 89.3 Berkeley, KFCF 88.1 Fresno.”  So long as the call letters are read individually and the city after that (with only the numbers in between or before) the ID is following US Code 47 CFR 73.1201 outlining how and when stations must identify themselves.
