Songs to Obsess Over & Over…
March 2025
TOKiMONSTA feat. Gavin Turek “Lucky U”
(Young Art)
Grammy-nominated artist, producer and label-head TOKiMONSTA has officially released her heavily anticipated studio album, Eternal Reverie, out now on Young Art Records. Lucky U jumps out at you utilizing the classic Lyn Collins “Think” break as it’s bedrock, backed with a loungy jazz guitar riff and added 4 to the floor kicks. Gavin Turek’s silky smooth vocals compliments this beat making it a stand out on the new album with lots of repeat listening required.
Doves – “In The Butterfly House”
(Heavenly)
Doves are one of those bands that’s been around for a while, always been consistent with amazing albums and never folding to the pressure of sounding like anyone else to sell more records. I’ve always likened them to “If Coldplay took their music more serious and didn’t suck”. They released their latest project “Constellations For The Lonely” in late Feb a bit under the radar on Heavenly Recordings. “In The Butterfly House” is one track of many I can’t get out of my head. Gorgeously crafted with it’s pounding drums and haunting melody that feels it’s somewhere between Radiohead’s “Knives Out” meets a 70’s Italo Giallo Dario Argento movie. It’s top tier Doves.
Dave & Maurissa – “You Decide”
(Z)
- English House producer/DJ David Lee teams up with Detroit’s Maurissa Rose for the album “London/Detroit”, dropping some very sun soaked disco house vibes, mixed in with some 70’s influenced soul and jazz, sure to match the weather as Spring begins and into Summer. You Decide, their latest single, is pure soulful disco that will have you movin’ & groovin’. It’s pure feel good vibes that sound like it was built for dancing to on a sunny Sunday afternoon with a perfectly crafted cocktail. Do not sleep on this album.
Hannah Cohen – Dusty
(Virgin)
San Francisco born singer Hannah Cohen returns with her latest single, Dusty. This laid back gem recalls a very Spring At Delores Park in the 70’s vibe to it, that reminds me of Minnie Ripperton’s cover of “Les Fleur” with a touch of Jessie Ware’s “Remember Where You Are”. Dusty combines a pre programed percussion track straight from the 70’s Maestro Rhythm King era, complete with some mellow guitars, drums and some lovely flutes and string sections. This is the perfect afternoon unwind anthem.
Alfonso Zenga, Paolo Gatti – Sparklin’ Conversation (From “Sensi Caldi” Soundtrack)
(CAM Sugar)
File under: New music to me. This compilation, Red Light Disco from Filmmaker Eli Roth (Hostel, Thanksgiving) brings out some of the best music from the soundtracks of the Italian Sexploitation film era of the 70’s and 80’s. Consisting of Disco, Funk and a couple of real funky musical oddities, this compilation is a reminder of how much effort musicians in the 70’s put into their craft back then, similar to the incredible music of the Blacksploitation and other exploitation film eras, these songs will make you take notice and jam out. There’s even a blatant rip off of Funkytown by Lipps Inc on this comp. The track I’ve selected kicks off this album and sets the tone perfectly for what else is to come and really sounds like it could have been made today. That is the genius of great music. It’s timeless feel, even if used for a trashy low budget flick, the quality and talent of these musicians remains high.
