Kevin Vance was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. His situation is compounded by mounting debt which threatens his ability to stay in his home.
Few volunteer radio programmers have given more to the Bay Area music scene than Kevin Vance. Kevin has enriched the Bay Area music scene practically every week for the last 40+ years.
He started volunteering at KPFA in 1973. At age 15 he began volunteering as a substitute host. He went on to host “As Clouds Roll By”, “First Light” and Robbie Osman passed the baton to Kevin to host the long running “Across The Great Divide” 11am on Sunday mornings. In between Kevin’s versatility has enabled him to fill in for many folk, country, world, classical, jazz, and reggae shows on KPFA.
Kevin has also filled in for Dore Stein on Tangents. Starting in 1991 Kevin created Patchwork Quilt on KALW which airs Saturday afternoons 5p-6:30. He’s currently the only person to host locally produced music programs on both KALW and KPFA.
Let’s raise critical funds for Kevin and equally important show him lots of love by coming out on April 9th for a terrific quadruple bill featuring Stephen Kent, Blame Sally, Eric and Suzy Thompson and Maurice Tani.
You can also contribute to Kevin’s GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/ftba7frx
Kevin has MCed the Porch Stage at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass for at least the last 3 years where I’ve worked. He’s delightful to know and a treasure for the Bay Area’s radio and music communities. Show lotsa LOVE by coming to the concert and/or going to Kevin’s GoFundMe page.
Can’t imagine a better replacement for Robbie than Kevin, but it’s also time for Robbie to come back. We need you two more than ever. Only music and dare I say it, love, can heal what hate has wrought. As we said to Shane in the 50s, Come Back!
