This event is hosted by Tim Lynch and David Gans and raises money for listener-sponsored KPFA. It features 15 hours of unreleased Grateful Dead recordings and related material, including interviews and a live in-studio performance by Grateful Brass.
KPFA is the oldest listener-supported public radio station in the world. As a Bay Area counterculture staple, they have a long history with The Dead. Jerry actually met Phil while Phil was a volunteer music tech and DJ at KPFA and Jerry came in to play on another hosts program.
A cool thing about KPFA is that it doesn’t take any corporate money, so you won’t hear any ads, including those 30-second bits you get from NPR.
David and Tim have both been hosting shows focused on The Dead’s music and community for decades, both on KPFA’s “Dead to the World” and on satellite radio. With special interviews, deep cuts of both studio and live music, as well as live guests and fantastic artwork available only during this marathon, it’s worth tuning in for whatever you can.
Miss the show? You can still catch it streaming online for the next two weeks. (Keep in mind, thank-you gifts for donations often go really fast, if you’re interested in any of the t-shirts or signed photo prints offered as pledge gifts.)
You can hear the live broadcast on the web at KPFA.org, on Nugs.net, and I probably also a few other streaming platforms, as well as on the radio at 94.1 FM in the SF Bay and 88.1 in Fresno.
