this episode is no longer available

Join host Dean Suzuki in conversation with Dr. Roger Woodward, Professor in the School of Music and Dance at San Francisco State University

Roger Woodward is a world renowned Australian pianist whose specialties include contemporary music. He has worked with composers such as John Cage, Morton Feldman, Olivier Messiaen, Toru Takemitsu, Iannis Xenakis, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, among many others. Many of these composers have written specifically for Woodward. Morton Feldman notes: " . . . three very important performers in my life at the piano. One was David Tudor. . . . The other is the Australian pianist Roger Woodward, and of course Aki Takahashi." Indeed, Feldman’s monumental Triadic Memories was dedicated to Woodward and Takahashi.

Woodward will be discussing, among other things, his recent recordings of music by Hans Otte and Peter Michael Hamel on the Celestial Harmonies label. Both of these CDs will be offered as premiums on May 15 during "Discreet Music" as part of our spring fund drive.
