Edward Said on “The Idea of Palestine”

In this speech, Edward Said professor of literature at Columbia University and public intellectual explains how Israel cannot defeat the idea of Palestine. This was recorded, at the Town Hall in New York City, July 25, 1982. Professor Said describes the idea of Palestine as a desire for a community of people to be able to live together, tolerant of each other and possessing self-determination. Said is the author of many books, including his most famous, Orientalism a critique of how the Western World perceives the East. He frequented the KPFA airwaves before his death at the age of 67 in 2003. This speech from 1982 continues to be relevant today.
