It’s week five of The Hear and Now’s six-week marathon of live music from the KPFA studio, and we feature the Berkeley Choro Ensemble–flutist Jane Lenoir, clarinetist/saxophonist Harvey Wainapel, percussionist Brian Rice, and guitarist Ricardo Peixoto. The ensemble will celebrate the release of its album, The View from Here, in a concert Saturday, Feb. 10, at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Albany (1501 Washington St.). But first the quartet visits KPFA to play its buoyant interpretations of choro pieces by such Brazilian composers as Ivanildo Maciel, Mário Sève, Cesar Camargo, Mariano Domingos Teixeira, and Israel Bueno de Almeida. Choro (“shoro”) evolved in Brazil in the late 19th century, bringing together the music of Brazil’s European immigrants and the native music of Brazil’s indigenous and African-Brazilian population.
