Darren Johnston, the iconoclastic Canadian-born Bay Area trumpeter has appeared on The Hear and Now in the past with The Nice Guy Trio and his Broken Shadows band. Tonight he returns with his Bye Bye Bartok quartet, which includes Matt Renzi (clarinet, English horn, tenor sax), Adam Shulman (piano), and Eric Vogler (upright bass). The studio concert program will include standards and originals, and will draw from the quartet’s repertoire of Bach, Sibelius, Bartok, Tchaikovsky, Faure, and Satie (“Reimagining great symphonic and chamber themes”).
Derk Richardson hosts, and Tony Ferro engineers.
The Bye Bye Bartok quartet performs Saturday, Jan. 13, at Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco. Johnston will also perform and all-improv concert, Reasons for Moving, Friday, Jan. 12, with Fred Frith, Larry Ochs, and Allison Miller, at Bird & Beckett Books and Records in San Francisco.
