Mayan weaving and their stories told

On Saturday, November 22, at 5 PM, Celia Sántiz Ruiz and Maria Gutierrez, members of the Jolom Mayaetik weaving cooperative, will be at Talavera Ceramics to demonstrate Mayan weaving technique on a back-strap loom and describe the daily lives of Mayan women weavers and their communities in Chiapas, Mexico's southernmost state. Textiles from Jolom Mayaetik will be available for viewing and purchase, as well as Voces que tejen y borden historias, a book of interviews with Jolom Mayaetik weavers recently published in Spanish by the cooperative. Door Dog Music Productions presents the 9th annual San Francisco World Music Festival with the theme "The Reeds Give Way To The Wind" from Nov. 9th through Nov. 23 in various venues. The festival starts with a gallery opening featuring the work of young artists from around the world at the The Thoreau Center in the Presidio which will run during the duration of the festival. There will be appearances at special concerts and workshops by master reed artists such as Birol Topaloglu from Turkey, Zhang Yu and Wan Peng Guo from China, Azerbaijani master Rahman Asadollahi, Riccardo Tesi from Italy, percussionist Weng Wei from China, Kurdish percussionist Duygu Bayar plus Romany musician Rumen Sali Shopov. Other artists featured will include Zhang Xiao Feng from China, the California Youth Chinese Symphony, the Kurdish Youth Chorus and Armenian oud player Phillip Hagopian. The premiere of a new commissioned work The Reeds Give Way To The Wind will be showcased at the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco on Friday, November 21st at 8 pm. Birol Topaloglu will give a Laz Horon dance class and a concert with percussionist Rumen Sali Shopov and local Balkan musicians on Sunday, Nov. 23, 7 pm at Ashkenaz in Berkeley. Other venues include the SF Public Main Library, the Asian Art Museum, the Alice Fong Yu Alternative School and Ashkenaz in Berkeley. Co-sponsored by KPFA.

The Ecology Center

The Board of Directors of the Mario Savio Memorial Lecture & Young Activist Award, in cooperation with the Berkeley Unified School District, the Free Speech Movement Cafe, the UC Graduate Assembly and the UC Berkeley Library, presents: 12th Annual Mario Savio Memorial Lecture & Young Activist Award

Presented annually to honor the memory of Mario Savio (1942-1996), a spokesperson for Berkeley's Free Speech Movement of 1964, and the spirit of moral courage and vision which he and countless other activists of his generation exemplified; to promote the ideals and values he struggled to advance throughout his life; and to recognize and encourage young activists striving to build a more humane and just society.

Named a "Hero for the Planet" by Time Magazine, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s reputation as a resolute defender of the environment stems from a litany of successful legal actions. He helped Riverkeeper lead the successful fight to restore the Hudson River, spawning 177 Waterkeeper organizations across the globe. He is Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, Chief Prosecuting Attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper and Chairman of Waterkeeper Alliance. He has worked on environmental issues across the Americas and has assisted several indigenous tribes in successfully negotiating treaties protecting traditional homelands. A professor of law at Pace University as well as an award-winning author, his most recent book is Crimes Against Nature (2004).
