Data-collecting corporations and snooping government agencies are destroying democracy, insists Robert Scheer. The Constitution’s Fourth Amendment guarantee of the sovereignty of the individual —“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated”— is being treated as an irrelevant relic of a bygone civilization. Our freedom has been squandered in the dubious name of national security and consumer convenience. We must challenge, Scheer argues, the assumption that protecting national security demands sacrificing the constitutional rights of the individual.
