The United Nations Security Council delayed a vote on a Gaza cease-fire resolution for the second day in a row. The United States is objecting to language that calls for an “urgent and sustainable cessation of hostilities.” U.S. officials argue that such language would only help Hamas regroup and plan future attacks against Israel. In an attempt to avoid a U.S. veto, diplomats are considering new language calling instead for “the urgent suspension of hostilities to allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access…and for urgent steps towards a sustainable cessation of hostilities.”
