Arabic Poetry. The 2nd of a 7-part special on spoken word of the
Middle East. This second show deals with Nizar Qabbani (1923-1998), one of the most popular poets of the Arab world. Salma Khadra Jayyusi writes that Qabbani "called for the liberation of both body and soul from the repressive injunctions imposed upon them throughout the centuries, awakening women to a new awareness of their bodies and their sexuality…." Qabbani wrote more than two dozen books of poems, many of which were made into lyrics by famous Arab singers.

Hosted by Jack Foley.
