The Grammy-nominated Alphabet Rockers makes kid-friendly hip hop with a passion for social justice; Plus: That Don Reed Show

0:08 – Alphabet Rockers (@alphabetrockersare a nationally touring kid-friendly hip hop group out of Oakland, CA, addressing complex issues around identity and social justice through their hip hop music. Its members include Juan Amador (aka DJ Wonway Possible) and Choreographer Samara Atkins along with its two core member Kaitlin McGaw and Tommy Shepherd. Their crew also includes an extensive artistic and business team. Their Grammy nominated album #RiseShineWoke is not just songs about numbers and nutrition. It includes songs about hue, immigration and discrimination. We speak with the core members about making woke music for children. McGaw and Shepherd join us in-studio.

0:34 – Actor, writer, and comedian Don Reed (@donreedwow) has a new one man show at the Marsh Theater in Berkeley titled That Don Reed Show.” In an evening sketches, stand-up and music, he uses his platform of comedy to entertain and provoke thought. His critically acclaimed one man show E14th, about growing up in Oakland in the 70s, won the 2016 best solo show of the year for Theater Bay Area. We speak with Don Reed about his career, his new show and the importance of blending comedy with social commentary.
