This week the Radio Chronicles celebrates National Poetry Month with Storytelling Through Poetry: The Continental Drift, a look at the artistic use of poetic language as a means of creative expression throughout the globe. Hear a sampling from each continent as poets like call for social change through action, denounce oppression, provide self critique, give history lessons, analyse social, political and economic conditions, celebrate cultural diversity, and discuss death.
In the first half hour, featured poets include Chinua Achebe (Nigeria), Gozo Yoshimasu (Japan), Andree Chedid (Egypt), mark Tipiss (Australia), Rita Odeh (Israel), Jorge Luis Borges (Buenos Aires), Louise Bennett (Jamaica), Sam Hazo (USA) and special guests from Antarctica. In the second half hour, we continue to celebrate National Poetry Month as we say happy fifty-eighth birthday to KPFA with Allen Ginsberg’s Howl, which first aired on KPFA fifty years ago.
