Voices of the Middle East and North Africa – January 31, 2007

On tonight’s program, Dr. Samera Esmeir will talk with filmmakers Eyal Sivan and Michel Khleifi, about their poignant documentary film "Route 181, Fragments of a Journey in Palestine-Israel". In this four and half hour documentary, the filmmakers travel together, tracing the virtual line that follows the borders envisaged in the United Nations Resolution 181. Resolution 181 that was adopted on November 29, 1947, called for the partition of Palestine into two states, one Jewish and the other Palestinian. In their travel, they capture stories of the people living along the 181 demarcation line and provide us with an oral history of what has happened since that time.

During the program, we will also hear selections from the "Journey to the Center of an Egg, a music CD by renowned Lebanese Oud player and composer Rabih Abou-Khalil who he has created his own style by masterfully combining Oud with western instruments.
