Voices of the Middle East and North Africa – August 17, 2005

In this week’s program, Dr. Zeina Zaatari will talk to Yanar Mohammed, a women’s activist based in Iraq and the Chair of the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq, about Iraq’s new constitution and its treatment of women’s rights. Yanar will also talk about how she and other activists carry out their organizing work among Iraqi women. Later in the program, we will hear the second part of our feature on Sudan in the wake of the death of John Garang, the long-time leader of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and the ensuing three-day riot in Khartoum and Jubia in the first week of August. Shahram Aghamir will talk to Sudanese activist Mohamed Algadi and UCLA Anthropology Professor and activist Sondra Hale about the state and civil society in Sudan as well as the U.S. policy with respect to that country. Also, in the program, a commentary by novelist Lelia Lalami titled Why Hollywood Owes Me Money.
